The medical term for excessive sweating is known a hyperhydrosis. This is a relatively common condition in both men and women, often affecting ones self-confidence when this unwanted and excessive amount of sweating can lead to social embarrassment affecting many aspects of daily life.
What causes Hyperhydrosis?
Hyperhydrosis (unusually excessive sweating) is when your body produces more perspiration, than is normally required to reduce body temperature. The exact cause of hyperhydrosis is not known, and some individuals may need to seek further medical advice before treatment.
Hyperhydrosis is caused by over activity of eccrine sweat glands within the skin. Many millions of eccrine sweat glands are concentrated in the palms, soles of the feet, and under the armpits.
Hyperhydrosis can present at any age, but it tends to be highest among working-age adults.
Sufferers may experience frequent staining and needing to change clothes, or social difficulty with sweaty palms. With continual wetness to the underarms, some people may experience a softening and whitening of the skin; allowing it to become easily infected and painful. This may lead to complications such as bacterial or fungal overgrowth, or in more serious cases, it can result in inflammatory dermatitis. Botox ® is a common and usually very effective treatment of choice, other possible options in severe cases can include surgery and in some cases medication.
How does it work ?
Botox® has multiple medical uses, one being the ability to significantly reduce or stop excessive sweating by blocking the transmitter causing sweating.
What is involved in Hyperhydrosis treatment using Botox® ?
Botox® is a non-surgical and approved medical treatment for excessive sweating, which has been used for many years, with much success. After a local anaesthetic cream is applied to the area to be treated, multiple tiny and superficial fine injections of Botox® at a special dilution are carefully made by our experienced Registered Nurses. Botox® treatments are usually minimally uncomfortable and the treatment is well tolerated.
After treatment, sweating starts to reduce significantly within 48 hours, with Botox® being fully effective 2 weeks after treatment. Botox® injections to the underarms and palms of the hands and fingers is usually extremely effective, lasting for around 6-12 months for underarms, and 3 to 6 months for hand sweating. This is often life changing for those with a significant problem. Injection of Botox® to the feet is not available at THE CLINIC, due to the thicker skin to this area, and a large variability in its effectiveness.
Treatments costs vary depending on the volume of Botox® required for effective results. Please feel free to contact our clinical receptionist if you would like to know more about the cost of treatments or wish to make a booking with one of our fully trained and experienced Registered Nurses – we are more than happy to arrange a consultation to discuss your concerns in person.
